Visual and thermal camouflage on different terrestrial environments based on electrochromism

Abstract Hiding terrestrial objects from aerial monitoring has long been an important objective in national security and public safety. However, the diversity of environments raises great challenges to traditional camouflages optimized for a single spectral band or type background environment, rendering them vulnerable other bands backgrounds. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous visual thermal camouflage that can adapt two different based on thermally emissive electrochromic layer. We first explore diverse possible theoretical solutions dual-band dual-environmental by solving analytic constraints steady-state conditions select most viable approach. Based analysis, design active thin-film material systems approximate target visible infrared signatures backgrounds under proper bias voltage. Our potentially flexible surfaces also conceal heat sources such as human body well with tailored designs. These results provide new directions multi-band stealth
